Food and drinks you should definitely avoid this holiday season

We know, we know.  It's so hard to avoid temptation when it comes to avoiding rich foods, candy and specialty drinks during the holidays!  But trust us, a few moments worth of edible pleasure could wreak a lifetime's worth or misery on your pearly whites.  What should you try your hardest to avoid this holiday season?

  • Bourbon:  Yes, it's so tasty when added to eggnog, but your teeth and gums don't think so!  Bourbon makes the mouth dry - which creates an environment perfect for advancing gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath.
  • Candy Canes:  Sorry!  Candy canes are packed with sugar and can also cause chipped - and sometimes broken, teeth.
  • Citrus Fruits: Yes, fruit is nutritional - but acidic foods such as limes, oranges and other citruses can erode enamel over time.  This causes weak and sensitive teeth.
  • Coffee: Reduced salivary flow caused by drinking coffee causes sugar and food to remain on teeth and gums longer.
  • Corn on the Cob: Biting into corn on the cob occasionally leads to cracked fillings or loosened sealant.
  • Dots and Jujubees: Chewing these incredibly hard and sticky candies can lead to loosened sealant and TMJ pain.
  • Dried Fruit: A better option than a cookie - but dried fruit is still full of sugar that will stick to your teeth and cause decay.
  • EggNog: One of the WORST holiday beverages because it contains sugar, alcohol, and dairy.  The combination leads to an excessively dry mouth with is a breeding ground for bacteria.
  • Fruitcake:  Sticky and sweet fruitcake can cause tooth decay and have the potential to dislodge crowns.
  • Hot Chocolate: Hot cocoa's high sugar and milk content can lead to tooth decay and bad breath.
